Meet the Teacher

8/24/20

Dear Olympic Families,

Our teachers, support staff and I have been busy planning for the upcoming school year, dedicated to making it successful for all. Although it will look different from past years, we plan to hold a Meet the Teacher event again before the first day of school. We will take the steps necessary for keeping students, parents and staff safe while meeting in person. In addition, we have a plan that allows students and their parent(s) to spend some time with their teacher, pick up a Chromebook, and sign up for a Wi-fi hotspot to prepare for remote learning 2.0.

Each student will have a half-an-our time slot to meet and become familiar their teacher, receive a Remote Learning Resource packet and some assistance for how to use the Chromebook to find and turn in assignments as well as accessing learning programs. We have set up a schedule for families with more than one student at Olympic to come and attend all their children’s sessions back-to-back on the same day for their convenience.   Your teacher will contact you soon to schedule a time.

Date and time: Meet the Teacher – September 2nd, 3rd or 4th

Half-hour time slots from 8:30 – 4:00 (special evening sessions are available upon request)

Where: Report to the location on campus where students are dismissed after school (see details below).

How: Social distancing guidelines will be posted and monitored for everyone’s safety (face coverings, social distancing of six feet, washing hands often). An attestation form will need to completed for everyone planning to enter a classroom. This is an agreement that you do not have COVID-19 symptoms nor have you been in contact with someone with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Distances of six feet will be marked with X’s on sidewalks at all pick-up locations.  All staff will wear face coverings.  We require students and family members do the same.

 Station location:

  • Kindergarten – On the porch near the parking lot
  • 1st Grade – At the fence opening next to the large gate and crosswalk
  • 2nd Grade – At the fence opening next to the porch
  • 3rd Grade – The front doors of the main building (near the flagpole)
  • 4th Grade – The south end of campus, the gate 4th/5th grades exit for dismissal
  • 5th Grade – The south end of campus, the gate near the gravel parking lot

Sincerely,

Mike Mendenhall / Principal

End of Year Send-off and Goodbye

We would like to invite you to come and say goodbye to the 2019-20 school year with a drive by parking lot send-off! Staff will be lined up on the sidewalks surrounding the Olympic Elementary parking lot on Thursday June 18th from 11am-2pm to say goodbye to students for the year. Please try to come during the following times if you are available.

  • 11am-12pm if your last name starts with A-F
  • 12-1pm if your last name starts with G-N
  • 1-2pm of your last name starts with O-Z

Splitting up the time slots this way means the shortest wait times but if this schedule does not work for you, feel free to come anytime from 11am-2pm.

In order to practice good social distancing, families will remain in their vehicles at all times and parade past the staff so we can wish each of them well as we complete the school year. You may be surprised at the silliness we come up with to say goodbye.

During this time you will be able to quickly stop at your child’s grade level station to collect their summer learning packet. On the kindergarten porch Mrs. Buccola will have a station where you can quickly stop to drop off library books and, also on the Kindergarten porch, there will be a station where you can return your student’s Chromebook if you choose to not keep it for the summer.

In order to minimize the disruption to traffic on 30th Avenue, vehicles will enter the parking lot facing North on 30th (towards Fred Meyer) so they turn right into the parking lot. When they complete the parade they will also turn right back onto 30th facing North.

We hope to see you all there!

Chromebook information

June 8, 2020

Dear Olympic Families,
I hope this letter finds you all well and looking forward to a more relaxed summer.
There has been a change in plans regarding the Chromebooks we loaned out as part of our Remote Learning program. Originally, we planned to collect them on June 17th 18th and 19th  recently was informed by the district that students will be able to keep the Chromebooks over the summer. This will allow your student to continue to learn through on-line programs the next few months.

Please check out the Longview School District’s website for learning activities to do over the summer. On the front page, there is a link to Learning Resources. From there you will be directed to a page where you can access on-line learning programs suited for your child’s grade. I also encourage your student to read just 20 minutes a day or as often as possible.

Information regarding an end-of-the year celebration will be coming out soon. We, your Olympic staff, would like to connect one last time with families before leaving for the summer. Stayed turned to our webpage, Facebook page and School Messenger for the details.

Finally, I would like to thank all parents, guardians, family members and students for the work you put into completing schoolwork from home. This has not been easy nor is it what we wanted or expected when the school year began back in August. However, so many of you stepped up and did your best to continue working hard on your learning activities. Your dedication made a difference in achievement at Olympic!

Sincerely,
Mike Mendenhall/Principal

5/22/20 Remote Learning Science Kits Pick-up

“Hello Olympic families! We have take-home science kits for your students this week. All you have to do is come pick them up at the school on Friday May 22nd. Please try to come during the following times if you are available.

  • 11am-12pm if your last name starts with A-E
  • 12-1pm if your last name starts with F-H
  • 1-2pm if you last name starts with I-Q
  • 2-3pm if your last name starts with R-Z

Splitting up the time slots this way means the shortest wait times but if this schedule does not work for you, feel free to come during a different time slot.  We will also distribute both learning packets and science kits from 5-6:30pm if this time is more convenient for you.

In order to get the science kits distributed as quickly as possible we will have a station set up right on 30th avenue under the Olympic greeter board.  Please come down 30th facing North, toward Fred Meyer, and just pull to the curb. We will ask you your students names and grade levels and hand you the appropriate kits. Then you can drive on and turn into the parking lot to get your weekly learning packet if you are not doing all of the school work online. There may be a short line that has formed along the curb in front of the school but it will move quickly.

We look forward to seeing your on Friday!”

Rotary Club book distribution / Grab and Go meals

Dear Olympic families,

The Longview Rotary Club has generously donated a large number of books for Olympic students. If you are interested in a couple of free grade level books, come to the school tomorrow, Friday May 8th from 11:00 to 3:00 and pick them up. There is a limited number of books and they will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. The books are organized by grade level and in small bags. Unfortunately, there isn’t a process to choose books due to the current safety practices we all are exercising. Therefore, a staff member will hand out a bag of two books for each student in the family. Please follow our procedure listed on the signs for car and in-person pick-up.

Mike Mendenhall/Principal

“Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.” – Mason Cooley.

Another additional bit of news: Olympic school has recently been added as a Lunch Meal ‘Grab and Go’ location. The bus will be in the Olympic parking lot Monday through Friday at 11:25 a.m. Any child, from birth to age 18, can pick up a grab and go breakfast and lunch each weekday. You don’t need to qualify or register to receive meals – the kids just have to show up. Be ready at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled arrival time. Students must be visible at the bus stops to receive meals and please remember to practice social distancing. Bus delivery meal service will continue through June 19, 2020.

School Supplies and Learning Packet pick-up letter

4/15/20
Dear Olympic Families,
We have developed a plan for students and their families to pick-up belongings and school supplies left in classrooms prior to Governor Inslee’s Stay-at-Home order.  Packets for students to complete next week will be in the bag with your child’s belongings and school supplies.  The safety of our students, families and our staff is the top priority as we go through this together.  Therefore, it is crucial that everyone follows social distancing guidelines throughout the process.  The following information is the procedure we will use as families and students arrive on campus:
Date and time:  Friday, April 17th  – 10:00 a.m -3:00 p.m. – Families will come to school at designated times based upon the last name, first initial, of the oldest student in the family. (See below)
Where:   Report to the location on campus where your student is dismissed after school.
How:  Para-educators and support staff will escort students to and from classrooms, one at a time.  Social distancing guidelines will be posted and monitored for everyone’s safety.  Distances of six feet will be marked with X’s on sidewalks at all pick-up locations.  All staff will wear masks and gloves.  We strongly recommend students and family members do the same.  Please refrain from hugs, handshakes, high-fives, fist bumps, etc.
Station location:
Kindergarten – On the porch near the parking lot
1st Grade – At the fence opening next to the large gate and crosswalk
2nd Grade – At the fence opening next to the porch
3rd Grade – The front doors of the main building (near the flagpole)
4th Grade – The south end of campus, the gate 4th/5th grades exit for dismissal
5th Grade – The south end of campus, the gate near the gravel parking lot
Scheduled time:   (by the first initial of last name)
10:00 – 11:00 –A-C
11:00 – 12:00 –D-H
12:00 – 1:00 –I-M
1:00 – 2:00 -N-R
2:00 – 3:00 – S–Z
Grade level teachers may be working in classrooms during the pick-up times and will be able to say hello to students, following social distancing practices.
Student medications, epipens, inhalers, etc. will be signed-out to parents/guardians at the front doors of the main building, near the flagpole on Friday the 17
Student and parents, if you have any school library books out, please return them on Friday.
Please contact your classroom teacher or me for any questions you have before or after Friday.
Sincerely,
Mike Mendenhall
